Oh God I’m desperate… Down on my knees. Send help from heaven …Cuz that’s what I need. Redeem this wreckage… Restore my peace…. I’m not asking I’m begging Lord come through for me!” – Lyrics from the song Desperate by Jamie MacDonald
“When David and his men came to Ziglag, they found it destroyed by fire and their wives and sons and daughters taken captive. So David and his men wept aloud until they had no strength left to weep.” – 1 Samuel 30: 3-4 NIV
Desperation is a whole different level of need. Many of us have never lived in a form of hopeless despair, but if you have, the suffering and anguish associated with it is unbearable.
Like David and his men, there have been three times in my life I have wept so strongly, that the cries and moans still echo in my mind. To be so drained of hope, so desperate for a miracle intervention, or to have no human remedy for the situation you face can devastate your mind and empty your heart of all the faith you possess.
Maybe the addiction has brought you to your knees or the troubling thoughts seem impossible to overcome. Has your illness intensified to a point where a cure isn’t feasible or have your resources been drained dry without any help or support in sight?
Tonight, if you find your life in a state of desperation, turn to the story of David and his men above found in the 30th chapter of 1 Samuel.
David’s life was filled with desperate situations and challenging circumstances. He faced a giant in battle, a king that was out to kill him, and a son who died because of his own indiscretions. He dealt with a loved one who wanted him dead and the death of the best friend he ever had.
So, in the story listed above, it’s fair to say David was no stranger to despair. In this instance, due to the heavy burden of loss, David’s men were bitter and talking of stoning him. Within that distress, the Bible says David “found strength in the Lord his God.” (1 Samuel 30: 6)
In my own desperation, the only place where relief, hope, and renewal were found is with our God.
“In my desperation I prayed, and the Lord listened; he saved me from all my troubles.” – Psalm 34:6 NLT
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” – Psalm 34:18 NIV
“Yet, I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my help and deliverer; O my God, do not delay!” – Psalm 40:17 NIV
“For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end.” – Psalm 49:7 NIV
No situation is too desperate or too out of control for our God! I love how Jamie MacDonald writes that what we need when we are desperate is “help from heaven” 😊 The Scriptures remind us that God is an “ever-present help in times of trouble” (Psalm 46:1 BSB)
I love how the Psalmist above reiterates that God saves those who are desperately crushed in spirit! If you are desperate tonight my friend, know that God is thinking of you 😊 and he is our guide to the end!
David in the story above prayed for that guidance. He asked God what to do and God answered him. He gave him the wisdom he needed in desperate times.
God, how do I break this addiction? How, Lord, can I change the way I think? Father, where are you in this diagnosis? How will you provide the help I need?
As Jamie MacDonald writes, “I’m begging Lord, come through for me!”
In David’s story, victory required a fight against his enemies – a fight God was supporting (1 Samuel 30:17) and he recovered everything! The Bible says, “nothing was missing”.
I don’t know about you, my friend, but I desperately needed to hear this story tonight! Nothing was missing. Desperation turned to joy! What seemed like defeat and devastation turned to joy and excess!
Our Father, my friend, is supporting you in your desperation! Your part of the fight is to keep praying!
“Prayed all the prayers I can pray, but I won’t stop knocking ‘till you open the door.” – Desperate by Jamie MacDonald
If you haven’t listened to this song, I am begging you to as you face your own desperate times.
Tired? Hanging on by a thread? Need a miracle?
In desperation, turn desperately to your God! He’s the only answer to all the questions we have and all we face!
God Bless!!
