Where are you at tonight as you read this?
Do you feel as if you need to be spiritually washed or cleansed from all that has happened this past week? Does sin or evil feel so impenetrable that it seems as if no form of washing would be able to remove it from your life? Are you so down, that you feel undeserving of God’s grace – wondering if you have sunk too low, to a level that is beyond mercy?
Are you thirsty for more in this life, and nothing you seem to undertake or focus on is satisfying or fulfilling anymore? Have you been trying to grasp and hold on to something in your life and coming up empty versus opening your hands and receiving what God has in store for you – trusting it will envelop and satisfy every need or desire you possess?
When you think about it, the characteristics, principles, and elements of water are analogous to those found in our spiritual life.
Water is essential to life and the existence of all things. The human body is approximately 65% water and can only survive a matter of days without it.
Water is cyclical in nature – having no beginning or ending. As rain falls, nourishing all living things, the excess naturally flows to the lowest point – forming seas and oceans where it evaporates. These vapors form into rain clouds – keeping the continuous cycle of water flowing to earth.
Without water, things cannot be cleansed and thirst is never quenched. Flowing, potable water is pure, yet when it pools and is still, it becomes foul and stagnant.
Turn on your water faucet and let the water run. Try making a fist – grabbing and controlling as much of it as you can. When you open your hand, you will see that very little can be found inside. Now, open your hand and place it under the faucet. Notice how the water encompasses it – flowing naturally all around it. Notice how soft it feels – yet it has the power to cut and shape solid rock as it continually flows through canyons and ravines.
God is essential to life and the existence of all things. The Bible says we are made in the image of God himself (Genesis 1:27) and without him; we are nothing (John 15:5).
Like water, God has no beginning and no ending. (Revelation 1:8). God’s love and His mercy rain down on us continually – flowing naturally downward; rushing to meet the needs of those at the bottom or lowest point of their lives.
Only God can quench our spiritual thirst (John 7: 37-38) and through Him we are spiritually cleansed and made whole again. (Jeremiah 2:13 and Ephesians 5: 26-27) When we open up our hands and hearts to God, His power surrounds us – encompassing our lives, but if we fail to let it flow through us to others, it becomes stale, stagnant, and meaningless.
Today, as you encounter water via the rain or snow, or use it to quench your thirst or water a plant, think about the life-giving power of God. Envision His continual presence – ever-flowing in a constant, continuous cycle.
If you are down or in need, remember that God is naturally rushing and flowing to meet you at your lowest point. See the significance and power of opening your heart to Him – allowing Him to encompass your life, just like the hand that is surrounded by water as it opens up under the faucet.
Don’t let that power become stagnant and dormant, trying to control or harness it, but let it flow through you to others – helping to quench their spiritual thirst or cleanse their spiritual wounds or needs.
If you are trying to make it through life on your own right now, humbly realize that without God, you cannot exist. Yield to His soft, gentle Spirit within you – knowing that as it flows, it has the power to cut through the toughest, hardest issues you face.
“He saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit.” – Titus 3:5 NLT
May God bless you today and always!
