Let it Be

“When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me…. speaking words of wisdom – Let it be. – John Lennon/Paul McCartney

One of the hardest things to comprehend in this world is that sometimes (most of the time) the hardest things cannot be comprehended.  We can search for the meaning in the meaningless, we can long for logic to reveal itself in the illogical, and we can demand to see the reasoning within the unreasonable circumstances, but the mystery remains a mystery.

Are there mysteries in your own life right now that you long to solve?

Are you trying to make sense of an unexpected death, lingering health issues, or why a deep love just cannot work?  Have the unfulfilled dreams or the unrelenting hardships left you with more questions than answers, more doubt than hope, and more confusion than clarity?

Believe it or not, the best advice to follow when trying to get to the bottom of all the “whys?” in this world is to relinquish, surrender, and humbly submit to them.

“There will be an answer ….Let it be.” – John Lennon/Paul McCartney

Unfortunately, I seem to be an expert at demanding immediate answers.  I’m someone who has spent countless hours trying to come to the bottom of things – to logically make sense of the difficult and painful “whys?” in my life and the lives of those who mean so much to me.

Those countless hours spent lamenting, languishing, and longing for answers, left me with nothing but countless hours of seething, suspicion and suffering.  They left me faithless – not faithful, hopeless – not hopeful, and feeling like a victim – not victorious.

Faith, hope, and victory…. well, my friend, those things kind of seem important, and the more I think about it, they seem more important than all those “why” questions that consume me and the answers that I so eagerly demand.

Those “whys” of life have little to do with impeccable health, abundant finances, a perfect spouse, and long life.  They have little to do with our dreams and desires in the here and now, but more to do with how we are growing, learning, and preparing ourselves for what is next.  This journey we are all on isn’t about the next 80-90 years so much as it is about an infinite future.  It’s not about reasoning out and coming to the proper conclusions about why bad things happen to good people, why death comes too quickly for some and not others, or why hardships and suffering affect so many.  It’s not about big cars, big bank accounts, or big houses and businesses.  It’s not about living a disease-free life or spending it with the flawless mate.

It’s about developing faith when there is none left anymore.  It’s about remaining hopeful when all the hope has gone.  It’s about being victorious in everything and a victim of nothing.  These are the things that will remain a part of who we are in the world to come – in what lies far beyond the next 80-90 years.

These mysteries in this life…. the things that are hard to understand…. the things that seem unfair, unjust, or misguided, well my friend, there WILL BE an answer to each and every one we have faced, encountered and confronted.  We need to just let it be – learning to trust, rest, and be at peace – letting the events of life unfold as they have been destined to do from the beginning of time.

Trust a sovereign God who is in control – not some of the time but all of the time.  Know that faith only grows stronger in moments of doubt and questioning, not during times of self-confidence and self-certainty.  See this life as a learning, growth journey to the next, not the final destination. See the strength in humbly surrendering and the indescribable peace that comes within it.

“And when the night is cloudy there is still a light that shines on me…. Shine on till tomorrow, let it be.” – John Lennon/Paul McCartney
