Unsearchable

“He does great and unsearchable things, wonders without number.  He gives rain to the earth and sends water to the fields.  He sets the lowly on high, and mourners are lifted to safety.” – Job 5:9-11

“Have you not known?  Have you not heard?  The everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary.  His understanding is unsearchable.” – Isaiah 40:28

There is a hidden, unfathomable, and mysterious side to God – an aspect of Him that is unsearchable.  Try as we might, our human minds cannot reason out or make sense of all that God is, what He does, or what He has in store for us.

The Bible says, “the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God” (1 Corinthians 3:19 NLT).  Think of all the technological advances that have been made throughout history and those yet to come, and still, they are miniscule, insignificant, and small within the realm of God’s wisdom.  The greatest scholars, the most thought-provoking philosophers, and the scientists who deserve the utmost praise and admiration of our time hold a microscopic fraction of the Creator’s knowledge.

This God of ours who counts the stars and calls them all by name (Psalm 147:4), who rides on the wings of the wind (Psalm 104:3), who spoke light into existence (Genesis 1:3), and laid the foundations of the earth (Isaiah 51:13), my friend, that same dynamic, powerful, glorious God, counts every tear that you cry (Psalm 56:8), knew you BEFORE you even took human form (Psalm 139:15-16) and has seen every day of your life before it came to be (Psalm 139:16).

He resides inside each of us (John 14:16-17) yet is with the deer who gives birth in the middle of the forest (Job 39:1).  He counts the hairs on your head yet knows when every tiny bird falls to the ground (Matthew 10: 29-30).  The earth trembles as the mountains melt before Him (Psalm 97:5). His voice is the sound of thunder (Psalm 29:3), yet He speaks to us in gentle whispers (1 King 19:12) and leads us beside quiet, still waters (Psalm 23:2).

When I think about His unsearchable nature, there is a peace that comes with it.  When we cannot figure out what lies in store for us down the road, He already knows the next steps.  When all our resources are drained, He and He alone sustains us and lifts us up again.  When death enters our lives unexpectedly, He has already conquered it.  He knows who we will love before they are loved by us, knows the path we take, and guides us continually in the mystery of His providence.  He is everything we are not and more!

Yet, that unsearchable nature can be unsettling – when we can’t figure out why He isn’t meeting our needs or helping us reach our dreams and desires.   Is He really there?  Is He listening?  Does He sincerely love and care for us?

Even deeper yet, how can one ever develop a close, intimate relationship with a God who is unsearchable – beyond our ability to comprehend or understand?  How do you truly love someone who is mysterious at times?  Can you trust them?  How do you get past unanswered prayers, a deep silence when you are longing to hear from Him, or events that unfold where He seems absent or aloof?  How do you love and cherish a God who often operates behind the scenes – hidden from view?

The key my friend is faith – to be SURE of what we hope for and CERTAIN of those things we do not see (Hebrews 11:1) – those aspects of God that are beyond reason and unsearchable to us.  Without faith, it is impossible to nurture and grow our relationship with Him (Hebrews 11:6).

Faith and expectancy (a knowing in advance that God is at work in our lives for good) are the pillars that rise us above the unfathomable mysteries of God.  When faith is hard to come by, when it is difficult to trust and believe, we can take great comfort in a God who is the author (the initiator) and the finisher (making it complete and fully developed in the end) of our faith (Hebrews 12:2).

Think about that for a second.  What is required of us to rise above the unsearchable nature of the God we serve has already been provided for us – as it starts and ends with Him!

Faith moves mountains (Matthew 17:20) and it moves God’s heart to act within our lives (Matthew 9:22, Mark 5:34, and Acts 14:9).  Faith brings us into right standing with God – justifying us (Romans 5:1) and making us righteous in His sight (Romans 4:13-16).

And it all begins and ends with Him!  🙂

That alone is beyond reason – a wonderful mystery to contemplate about a God who loves us dearly and completely – even when we least deserve it!

Today I hope you see the glorious aspects of an unsearchable God – taking comfort that when we don’t know the answers, God most certainly does!

I pray when the mysteries of God, the hidden parts of who He is, cause you angst or uncertainty, that you begin to see the importance of faith and expectancy in conquering those fears – a faith that He promises to instigate and finish within each of our lives!

What an awesome God we serve my friends – beyond understanding, yet never out of reach!  Unsearchable, but promising to reveal who He is if we simply ask in faith 🙂

“Call to me and I will answer you, and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” – Jeremiah 33:3

God bless!
