“He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?” – Micah 6:8 BSB
“To talk with God, no breath is lost. To walk with God, no strength is lost. To wait on God, no time is lost.” — E. Stanley Jones
“Those who walk with God always reach their destination.” — Henry Ford
When you meditate on the verse above from Micah, what comes to mind when you think about walking humbly with God?
Have you ever thought about it in the context of a requirement from the Lord? How do you interpret the meaning of “walking humbly with God”, and more importantly, how can this spiritually reasonable platitude translate into a normal, consistent routine within our life?
Continual Conscious Awareness
“Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me… Christ above me, Christ beneath me.” — Saint Patrick
“When there is enough consciousness, God appears… the presence of God will be as palpable as a heartbeat.” — Deepak Chopra
Walking humbly with God isn’t a performance standard we must meet. It may sound like it, as Micah lists it as something God requires of us, but it is less about performing a moral standard (we will discuss obedience as it relates to this later) as it is about a requirement from a loving God who knows the impact of what walking with Him will bring about in our life.
So often, we interpret God’s commandments and dictates as a performance test we must meet or pass, but God’s laws are less about attaining perfection as they are about a loving guideline and standard for living that bring us peace and purpose.
The practicality of walking humbly each day is centered in a sort of continual, conscious awareness – always keeping God’s presence at the center of all that’s unfolding in the moment.
It starts with morning prayers and eating a breakfast where He is thanked for the sustenance He provides. It’s talking to Him on your way to work – asking Him to be a part of that important meeting you are facing. It’s a peaceful assurance as you know He is watching and guiding your children at school that day.
It’s all the one-line prayers throughout the day – some of thanks, some filled with requests, some prayers for others as they cross your mind. It is within all your contacts with others that day – acting and behaving as if God was standing right next to you. It’s automatically and without hesitation having a peace about all circumstances that arise, both good and bad, knowing God’s sovereignty sits at the center of each one.
It’s ending the day reflecting – being grateful, focusing on where we could have done better, and counting all the blessings. It’s asking for God’s guidance, His wisdom, and His loving intervention as we fall into a deep sleep – getting ready to do it all again tomorrow.
Can you see the continual, conscious awareness of walking humbly next to the Creator as the life He gave you unfolds? When I personally think of this, I am humbly awe-struck by our God! How could I possibly walk through this life without Him?
Walking Infers Slowing Down
“The manner with which we walk through life is each man’s most important responsibility.” — Thomas Yellowtail
“Stop filling the quiet spaces; there’s magic in the margins where life actually happens.” — Unknown
“Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished” – Lao Tzu
Walking is such a LARGE part of my life 😊 As a walker/hiker, I have learned the value behind slowing down, observing the beauty around me, and looking for God in His creation. I love how God encourages us to “walk humbly” next to Him – not to run or rush through life, but to slow down and watch for Him, listen for His direction, talk to Him about our concerns, and contemplate the meaning and the purpose of the life He has given us.
He wants us to humbly realize the precious value of a life well-lived – fulfilling our created purpose as we walk alongside our Creator who is a constant source of guidance, wisdom, and providence for us.
Discipline to Obey
“Obedience to God’s will is the secret of spiritual knowledge and insight. It is not willingness to know, but willingness to DO (obey) God’s will that brings certainty.” — Eric Liddell
“True worship is obedience to God for no other reason than that you delight in God.” — J. D. Greear
“Obedience to God is the most infallible evidence that creatures can exhibit of their sincere and supreme love to Him.” — Nathanael Emmons
“For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.” – 1 Thessalonians 4:7 NIV
A large part of walking humbly with our Lord is to reverently honor who He is, His divine, unchanging character, and the principles that He embodies. You see my friend, the discipline to obey God isn’t about earning favor or avoiding punishment. It is as Greear states above – a form of true worship because we delight in Him! By the power of humility and reverence, we acquire the discipline to obey THROUGH GOD – who calls us to be holy because He Himself is holy (Leviticus 19:2).
You know you are walking humbly through life with God when you see obedience not as a command, or a duty, or a religious obligation, but a loving call from the Creator to become the person He has created you to be 😊
How can we possibly walk with our God and at the same time, live a lifestyle that opposes His principles? This is far from walking with Him and more in opposition to all He stands for.
What to Do When You Fall
“The LORD makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD upholds him with his hand.” – Psalm 37: 23-24 NIV
“Do not gloat over me, my enemy! Though I have fallen, I will rise. Though I sit in darkness, the LORD will be my light.” – Micah 7:8 NIV
There is some good and some bad news with the last question I asked. The bad news is we are human and we are certain to fall and stumble.
If we love God and we fail, we don’t feel worthy of walking with Him anymore. I say this to you my friend out of personal experience. The conviction and personal condemnation can become so heavy, we don’t feel worthy enough to walk alongside our God. The worse thing we can do when we fall away or stumble, is to stay down – to stop walking all together.
The good news can be found in the Bible verses above 😊 When we stumble in our humanness, we need to reach out for His hand that upholds us! As we sit in the darkness of our mistakes, we need to get up again and walk with our Lord who promises to be our light 😊
Today, I hope you meditate on how you walk with God through this life of yours. My prayer is that you choose to embrace a continual, conscious awareness of His presence – in all you do and encounter each day.
I hope you slow down – realizing there is more peace, more purpose, and more accomplishment found in walking versus rushing and running through life. Walking allows you to slow down enough to watch, listen, and observe what God is doing as you journey along with Him.
I pray that you begin to humbly see obedience differently – not as an obligation or a duty, but as a loving, precious gesture to our God who desires us to be more like him in all we do or say.
And when you stumble and fall (and you will my friend), don’t choose to quit walking out of unworthiness or conviction. Reach for His hand, let Him lift you back up, and walk out of the darkness toward His Light 😊
What a blessing, what a privilege, what an honor to walk humbly with YOUR God 😊 Isn’t that the essence of your destiny – the ultimate meaning of your journey here?
God bless!
